a room of one's own

It does seem a bit selfish as many women around the world live in cramped little spaces, sharing with members of extended family.  And in general I deplore the huge macmansion style housing that is being built of late, particularly along our natural coastline.  But I have been thinking  how blissful it would be to have a room of one's own.  A space that was a haven for me to retreat to.  That was away from the street noise and looked onto a sunny spot in the garden that has the softness of varied foliage.  There I could compile evidence of all my thoughts and inspiration.  Books, sketches, notes, letters.  Half finished craft projects.   I would like it to have a daybed for a sweet peaceful kip and also room for doing yoga and meditation.
Do you have a room of your own?

Not much of a McMansion girl myself.

I have an office type room that seems to be full of clutter, I like it because the rest of the house is actually pretty tidy.

I feel a bit embarrassed admitting this, but I do. I love it. It's my sanctuary, my quiet place, a place where I can play and draw and write and read and leave a big mess and not be mum. It's lovely. I wrote about it a few posts ago.

Ah, Jill! You know how much I am looking forward to having my own room in our new house ☺. Oh, and have you read Virginia Woolf's book of the same name? It's so intriguing. J x

I am very very lucky. I have a large corner of a large room. It is upstairs, overlooking trees and park, eventually to sea.

(Our house is a 1970's monstrosity. But it does have space - the space for me to sprawl...and dream, and work...)

I really liked this post, Jill. I have a room on the go, it needs a lot of work and it is tiny but there is a plan for it! And as for a room with a daybed in it...bliss

Nope, not me. I share a room with my Farmer Boy that is part Daylesford Organics office and part sewing room. It isn't really big enough to spread out in, or to bother decorating much.
Before we decided to go away on this trip we were looking into building me a purpose built studio. I guess it's a good thing it never happened as I might never have come home. x

I am very spoilt. I've always managed my own room in every single of our almost 20 houses together. In fact other than a brief period just after my brother was born 35 years ago, I've always had a room of my own.

Lately I just can't get time to go to it though. It's not much point having a room if you cant get to use it. I haven't sewed, embroidered , painted, lead lighted or any of the things that are in that room for just under a year! In fact I'm going away this weekend to a scrapbooking retreat just so I can get some done!

Hi Jill,

Thanks so much for popping by today to visit my blog. I loved finding yours. I just bought V. Woolf's essay two weeks ago, it's in my pile to read. Must get to it! Enjoy the rest of your week. Emma.

Oh I have a similar dream - I would just LOVE a room of my own. In my room I would also have a view of the garden, I'd be able to hear the birds and i'd either have a window seat where I could sit with my feet tucked up reading or there would be a suitable corner for loads of floor pillows...ahh I feel all relaxed just thinking about it!

I have a dream room mapped out in my head. It would have to have a window seat, a wall full of books, a corner for my desk and all things creative. Plus a space for my yoga and meditation. Plus it would be filled with all my treasure, buddhas, Amy Butler fabrics, photos of my boys, fresh flowers and of course music.
Aaahhh I could really do with that room right now.

ah a lady-shed. every girl needs one.

i have been lucky enough to have a 'studio' in our last few houses. heavenly. but not in the new house we're building unfortunately. i was thinking a cute vintage caravan might do the job. . .

And a lock on the door! I desperately want to take over our study but we use it sometimes as a second spare bedroom. I'm sure our visitors would rather not sleep in my creative mess! gxo
