Night time in Broken hill

The air is so dry here.  The spring winds have arrived with gusto and you can  taste the dust.  You know when you cannot stop licking your lips.  This creates the right atmosphere for stunning sunsets.

Broken Hill is really a thriving little metropolis.  Self-sufficient is the term that comes to mind.  Hard to imagine, so far away from everything and everyone.

I have met some groovy and  interesting people.  They moved away when younger but return here to have their own families and relish in the region's uniqueness.  I have met artists who choose to live here, not locals, but thrive on the eccentricity of this place.

My biggest privlege is meeting the local Baarkintji people, mainly through my work, but also around town.   I listen to their  stories.  Stories of being taken away.  Stories of family.  Great pioneering stories of working  on the land, in the mines.  The good old days.  Their cracker sense of humour.  Sadly also stories of  broken families and extreme hardship, and inter-generational trauma.

I took a little drive by myself this afternoon, after work, along the semi arid plains.  Again the sky was magnificent and you could almost see the curvature of the earth.  I had a bit of a ratty day in my head. I needed some time.  To have some space. To pause.

Now, all are tucked away blisfully asleep.  And I really should be too.

Good night.

listening

a volkswagon from the year I was born

Do you love sitting in your car, all nice and cosy when it is freezing outside?  On the weekend we decided to get out of the house and drive down to Wingecarribee River and take all the boys for a walk.  Once there I felt so tired and my neck was really paining.  I declined the walk and all the boys set off.  The car was facing west on the rivers edge.  It was late afternoon and the sun was just above the hills.  I was bathed in its warm glow shielded by the cold chilly wind.  There was a group of local kiddos playing soccor in just shorts and t shirts.  They were having lots of fun.  I closed my eyes and just listened to the sounds, both near and far.  The warble of the Magpies, the arrogant laugh of the Kookaburra, the squeals of delight of goals been scored between the gum trees.  I love these moments.  Being fully present.  Empyting my mind.  Letting the sounds waft around me.  I love sitting in the car alone.  Do you?

the spirit of things

In one of those cleaning up moments on a Tuesday mornning with the radio on in the background, listening to radio national ABC, I was captivated by the voice and teachings of Behram Ghista on the programme spirit of things.

I have had this nagging feeling of not being connected and whole.    Paying attention to the pracitice of yoga and meditation has been important to me.  However I have felt so depleted at times and find if difficult to be motivated and or find the energy for such.

If you have time to listen you may be inspired like myself to embrace more in your life.

28 days of gratitude - day 8- the kindness of strangers

A thoughtful lady at cubby house playgroup yesterday asked how I was feeling.  I confided in what was happening and mentioned our plans for the week.  After coming out of our kindamusic class this morning she greeted me with the most beautiful bunch of yellow roses from her garden.  Tucked under her other arm was her newborn baby son (her third child).  He is only 3 weeks old and his name is John. Isnt that just the best name in the world for a boy.

Listening to music.  Doesn't it feed the soul.  Helps you come in and out.  Transcending the moments.

I love radio national

Part of the joy of being home and being a Mama for me is having the time during the day to listen to radio national ABC AM radio.  I love it with a passion.  So many segments: lifematters, the philosopher's zone , the health report, in the mind.  It has become like a reliable friend.  I especially like listening to the spirit of things on Sunday night.  Have a listen to the audio if you have time.

I have been doing Yoga and meditation on and off since age 15 years.  I often wished I had become a teacher of Yoga and not been so academic.  Now I do at times want some time to myelf to sit and meditate.  I would just have to try and get up earlier than my son.  But I find myself wallowing around trying to yank my eyes open into the blur.

I guess mothering is already a challenge in being ever present in this moment and being mindful
